EPP foam (Expanded Polypropylene foam) is a high-performance foam material made by taking polypropylene (PP) as the base material, adding foaming agents and additives, undergoing pre-treatment of drying at 60℃ for 2-4 hours, and then conducting physical or chemical pre-foaming. The physical method uses a pre-foaming machine for pressure heating (120℃-160℃) and rapid pressure relief to make PP particles initially expand into particles with a density of 30-200 kg/m³. The chemical method involves mixing thermally decomposable foaming agents into PP during granulation; after being heated to 120℃-160℃, the foaming agents decompose and release harmless gases to promote particle expansion, and after cooling and setting, pre-foamed particles with consistent performance are formed

The foaming ratios of EPP can be divided into low foaming ratio (5-15 times), medium foaming ratio (15-30 times), and high foaming ratio (30-45+ times)

Foaming ratio: The higher the foaming ratio (the lower the density), the more air contained in the internal closed-cell structure. Since air has a low thermal conductivity, the thermal insulation performance is better; low-ratio products, due to their dense structure and low air content, have relatively weaker thermal insulation.

 
Closed-cell rate and bubble structure: The higher the closed-cell rate (with independent and non-connected bubbles), the more thoroughly air convection and heat conduction are blocked, resulting in better thermal insulation; if bubbles are broken or connected (low closed-cell rate), heat exchange will be accelerated, reducing thermal insulation performance.
 
Material thickness and volume: With the same foaming ratio, the greater the thickness and volume of EPP foam, the longer the heat transfer path, and the longer the thermal insulation duration (e.g., thick-walled insulation boxes retain temperature longer than thin-walled containers).
 
Environmental temperature difference and usage conditions: The greater the external temperature difference and the more drastic the environmental temperature fluctuations (such as exposure to high-temperature sunlight or low-temperature freezing), the more significant the test on EPP's thermal insulation performance; in addition, whether it is sealed (e.g., whether the box is covered and how tightly it is sealed) also affects the speed of heat exchange.
 
Additives and modification treatments: Some EPP products are added with additives such as infrared reflectors and flame retardants
Compared with traditional thermal insulation materials (such as EPS foam, polyurethane foam, polystyrene boards, or mineral wool), EPP foam offers several distinct advantages:
 
  1. Superior Thermal Insulation Performance: Its closed-cell structure with high air content (especially in high-foaming-ratio products) effectively blocks heat conduction and convection, maintaining stable temperature retention over longer periods—ideal for cold chain logistics and thermal insulation scenarios.
  2. Exceptional Durability & Impact Resistance: Unlike brittle EPS or easily crushed mineral wool, EPP foam boasts high elasticity and toughness. It can withstand repeated impacts, compressions, and vibrations without deformation or damage, making it suitable for long-term turnover and heavy-duty applications.
  3. Lightweight & High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: With low density (especially high-foaming-ratio EPP), it reduces overall weight of products (e.g., insulation boxes, packaging) while retaining sufficient structural strength, easing transportation and handling.
  4. Water Resistance & Moisture Resistance: The closed-cell structure prevents water absorption, avoiding performance degradation caused by moisture (a common issue with mineral wool or fibrous materials that tend to absorb water and lose insulation capacity).
  5. Eco-Friendliness & Recyclability: Made from polypropylene (PP), EPP is non-toxic, odorless, and fully recyclable. It can be reused or remolded after use, generating less environmental pollution compared to non-recyclable polyurethane or flame-retardant-treated polystyrene.
  6. Wide Temperature Adaptability: It maintains stable performance across a broad temperature range (-40℃ to 130℃), resisting thermal shrinkage or hardening in extreme cold or heat—outperforming materials like EPS, which become brittle at low temperatures.
  7. Moldability & Customization: EPP particles can be molded into complex shapes with high precision, adapting to diverse product designs (e.g., irregularly shaped insulation boxes or buffer components) without compromising insulation efficiency.
 
These advantages make EPP foam a preferred choice in fields such as cold chain logistics, packaging, construction, and automotive industries, where a balance of insulation, durability, and eco-friendliness is required
For an EPP foam box, you need to choose one based on the size of your product. A standard EPP foam box (approximately 60cm x 40cm x 30cm) weighs about 2 kilograms and can achieve a compressive strength of 150-300 kPa. This is because EPP foam forms a three-dimensional network structure through a special foaming process, allowing each cell to bear force evenly. For every 1cm increase in the thickness of the EPP foam box, the thermal insulation time can be extended by about 1 hour. It is important to choose a thickness suitable for your product. It is not the case that a larger box can hold more items. EPP foam boxes are classified as lightweight and bulky goods, resulting in higher transportation and logistics costs. Therefore, you should select the most suitable box for your product based on the product's external size and intended use.
 
 
 
 
  • EPP foam boxes adopt the steam molding process
  • Preheat the mold to 60-80℃
  • Use a vibration table to ensure uniform distribution of EPP beads
  • The hydraulic system applies a mold clamping pressure of 5-15 MPa.
  • Introduce high-temperature steam (120-140℃) at a pressure of 0.3-0.6 MPa, maintaining this condition for 20-60 seconds.
  • Use cooling water or air cooling for shaping (demolding) to lower the mold temperature to 70℃. For non-standard EPP foam boxes, we need to open a custom mold. This is very cost-effective for mass-produced products.
  • Trim excess flash or uneven edges of demolded boxes with cutting tools to meet dimensional accuracy.
  • Inspect quality (e.g., density, compressive strength, closed-cell rate) and reject defective products.
  • For specialized boxes (e.g., cold chain insulation boxes), add coatings or treatments to enhance performance.
